Educating a Toddler to Become an 'English Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The organization behind the listing explains that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is truly "deliberate investment in initial learning".

"A household located in north London wants to find an extraordinary and skilled educator to assist their most junior child on his first steps to growing into an British gentleman."

Looking at this listing, you might naturally miss the term "first-steps" as just an expression.

But, it might be the most important part of this unique job advert, as it aims to recruit a teacher for a infant.

Hundreds of responses have already been submitted since the unidentified family advertised their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who must be "someone very special".

During the past few weeks, the listing has gained attention throughout the news, with numerous asking why?

Forward-Thinking Method

The CEO, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is helping the family in their quest, stated that in spite of early scepticism, he viewed the plan "far sighted", and "progressive".

When he met the family, he mentioned they understood the unconventional character of their demand, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they clarified that they "preferred not to postpone any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural influence had already become established".

But what does the family refer to by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "comprehensive", the expert answered. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the firstborn had absorbed "really subtle, body language" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family informed the consultant they did not want history to repeat itself with their new baby.

The plan: To bring in a UK tutor, who should speak with Received Pronunciation, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
Tutors International state the listing has sparked a broader conversation about how families view education, advantage and the part of home and culture in learning.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the education at the start here is kind of osmotic," said Adam.

It's through this subtle influence that the family are aiming the child will acquire the English characteristics they want to impart.

He noted the tutor had to be an individual who attended "prestigious academies – the same kinds of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The tutor just has to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they don't even know they're doing, effortlessly," he commented.

Cost Not Relevant

The family told Adam the chosen tutor should ideally also have knowledge of or passion in horse riding, alpine skiing, creative fields and music so as to inspire the child in a diverse set of hobbies.

Furthermore though, he explained the family wanted the tutor to enrol the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "horseback riding and starting an musical instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son develop into a "British gentleman" will result in accomplishment and open doors.

"For all the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a social class indicator," he adds.

Yet, in spite of all this guidance in "UK identity", would the child absorb what is termed cultural leaning from the international family he resides with anyway?

"Yes", said Adam. "The parents realize this could fail, but they've simply adopted the perspective of, 'why not attempt it and we should start as quickly as we can', because the price of it is not relevant," he said.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

There are some in the education sector who share similar doubts.

Peter Cui, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who provides private tutors, stated that "the process of becoming bicultural, or in fact, discovering oneself, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

Peter noted that he had moved from China to the Britain at the period of seven, and had been brought up experiencing and living both cultures. He went on to be educated at Cambridge University.

The executive was the first individual originating from mainland China to be chosen to the position of Financial Officer of the university debating society.

"The idea that a single person can act as a living vessel of English culture, an individual who can somehow transfer the characteristics of a UK sophisticate onto a 12-month-old child, appears naive and unrealistic," he commented.

"In my experience, having a distinctly UK tutor from babyhood will not necessarily produce the goal they hope for.

"I did not have such a figure, and yet I have been lucky enough to enjoy several of the situations they aspire for their son."

He stated: "The truth is, cultural identity should not be imposed from the external environment; it must be selected, and it must originate internally."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, UK identity is something Adam believes can be taught – and commercialized.

"I think the reality that the global community holds us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
