A defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, from transport usage to communication practices.
