A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
