The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
